At this age, reading ability develops at very different speeds. A child may decode simple sentences but understand a much richer story when listening. Keep illustrated books in the mix, offer choice, and avoid treating larger text or pictures as signs that a book is too easy. Confidence grows through successful, joyful repetition.

Build a 6–8 reading basket

  1. Mix picture books, illustrated adventures and short chapter books.
  2. Include one familiar favorite beside every new challenge.
  3. Let the child alternate pages with an adult.
  4. Stop while reading still feels enjoyable, not exhausting.
